Roof had taken numerous photographs of himself wearing a jacket emblazoned with the Rhodesian, apartheid South African and Confederate flags, and had published a manifesto on a website called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2015\/jun\/20\/fbi-investigates-website-manifesto-charleston-shooting-suspect-dylann-roof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Last Rhodesian<\/a>\u201d in which he declared: \u201cLook at South Africa, and how such a small minority held the black in apartheid for years and years\u2026 if anyone thinks that think [sic] will eventually just change for the better, consider how in South Africa they have affirmative action for the black population that makes up 80 per cent of the population. It is far from being too late for America and Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Trump 2016 was getting into full stride and the media began reporting on what was then called \u201cthe alt-right\u201d, it became apparent that a new generation had embraced the Rhodesian and apartheid cause. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/20180410135256\/https:\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/10\/magazine\/rhodesia-zimbabwe-white-supremacists.html#selection-1283.78-1283.246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>New York Times Magazine<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported in 2018, during Trump\u2019s first term, that numerous online stores, such as \u201cthe Commissar Clothing Company, were hawking \u2018Make Zimbabwe Rhodesia again\u2019 hoodies and T-shirts\u201d. Another maladjusted, internet-addled 22-year-old hailing from Idaho, Joseph Smith, was quoted as saying: \u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019re aware these days being a conservative heterosexual white male is rather unpopular in the eyes of many,\u201d and \u201cthis is the demographic that caused Rhodesia to thrive as well as it did for as long as it did\u201d.
