Mandela Day, as it has become known, is a somewhat manufactured (and corporate-sponsored) example of a lingering throwback to what is referred to as \u201crainbow nationalism\u201d, an attempt to forge a new post-apartheid national identity based on non-racialism. As the opening line of the 1996 constitution, as well as the historic 1955 Freedom Charter, goes, \u201cSouth Africa belongs to all who live in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rainbow nationalism is now a faltering project, subsumed by the African National Congress\u2019s failure to redress the wrongs of the past and deliver an egalitarian, growing economy. South Africa is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/documents1.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/099125003072240961\/pdf\/P1649270b73f1f0b5093fb0e644d33bc6f1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranked by the World Bank<\/a>&nbsp;as the most unequal country in the world; it has an unemployment rate of around 35 per cent, basic services have collapsed in much of the country; and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polity.org.za\/article\/south-africas-low-growth-leaves-citizens-poorer-than-global-average-investec-says-2025-07-09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most South Africans<\/a>&nbsp;are poorer than they were in 2010.
