Towards a Concept of Ecological Sovereignty [After Order Working Paper Series]

by Sabrina Fernandes, Raj Patel and Juliano Fiori

What would it mean to rethink sovereignty through an ecological lens?

Join us online for the first event in Alameda’s After Order Working Paper Series. In this session, Sabrina Fernandes, Alameda Senior Leadership Fellow, will present her new working paper ‘Towards a Concept of Ecological Sovereignty’, opening up a critical reflection on dominant notions of sovereignty shaped by inter-state competition and logics of accumulation and control.

The conversation explores how these frameworks have worked against the self-determination of peoples — particularly those subject to colonial and imperial power — and turns towards the possibilities of popular and ecological sovereignty, centred on collective survival, radical sustainability, and a good life for the world’s majority.

The discussion also features researcher and filmmaker Raj Patel, an Alameda Associate and a leading voice on food, hunger, and international political economy, and will be chaired by Alameda Director Juliano Fiori.
